Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree with at least one subject from these – Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry, Engineering.
Age Limit: 21 to 32 years (relaxations available for SC, ST, OBC, PwD).

IFoS Exam Pattern

The IFoS exam is part of the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam, but after prelims, it has its own Mains and Interview process.

1. Preliminary Exam (Civil Services Prelims)

  • Same as IAS/IPS aspirants.
  • Paper I: General Studies
  • Paper II: CSAT

2. Mains Exam (Specific to IFoS)

  • 6 papers (Descriptive)
    • Paper I: General English – 300 marks
    • Paper II: General Knowledge – 300 marks
    • Papers III, IV, V, VI: Two optional subjects (each subject has 2 papers) – 200 marks each

3. Personality Test / Interview

  • 300 marks

Training of IFoS Officers

Selected candidates undergo training at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun.

  • Duration: About 2 years.
  • Training includes forest laws, wildlife management, biodiversity conservation, GIS and remote sensing, climate change, and field visits to forests and sanctuaries across India.
